The Home
Work, Rest or Play! Off the street and up a quiet lane you'll find this private, stylish & contemporary house with all of the comforts of home. The zones, size and amenity make this a perfect place for singles, couples, families with kids, and groups. There are two queen bedrooms, one being downstairs with a walk in robe and ensuite. The two bedrooms upstairs include another queen bedroom with walk-in-robe and a bedroom or office (with desk and chair) and a trundle daybed that converts into two, full single beds. The downstairs has a full open plan living area with dining table and chairs, sofas, and a HD smart tv with streaming capability. There's a full kitchen and laundry on this level that you'll love. Upstairs there's a second lounge area that could be a kids or parents' retreat or whatever will optimise your stay. Outside there's a fully fenced courtyard, an outdoor setting and BBQ.
Location
It's just 500 meters to the train, Austin & Mercy Hospitals, Olivia Newton-John Centre and the fantastic cafe, restaurant and shopping precinct on Burgundy Street. The train takes just 27 minutes to Flinders Street Station in Melbourne's centre. You can walk or hop on your bike to take the scenic Yarra-Trail to Melbourne CBD or eclectic Fitzroy, the popular Heide Museum of Modern Art or Yarra-Valley Wine Country. Park free in the 2-car garage (with internal access) or in the driveway.
Getting around
Heidelberg is prized as one of the most convenient locations of Melbourne, with its quick and easy access to Melbourne's CBD and surrounds. It's a fifteen minute drive to the city or 27mins by train and offers easy access to all of the major arterials/freeways that will take you anywhere in Melbourne or the state, and to the outer suburbs.
Public transport is fantastic to and from Heidelberg. A quick 27 minute train trip will get you to Flinders street. Buses are also easily accessible from everywhere and the train station. Trains and buses from Heidelberg will take you to all and any of the amazing attractions that Melbourne and regional Victoria have to offer. Ballarat (historic goldfields town) is a 2 hour 43 minute train ride via Southern Cross Station, or, if you prefer to stay close and go on foot or on wheels, there's the beautiful, scenic Birrarung/Yarra-Trail. There are so many more scenic routes that will take you to fantastic spots that are not available by road.
Eating, shopping and more!
Heidelberg has everything you would expect from an older, well- established suburb, and more. For short or longer-term stays at the property, I'm pleased to say that you'll want for nothing. There are so many supermarkets just a short walk or even shorter drive from the house, including Leo's Fine Food & Wine, Woolworths, ALDI, IGA, Coles and more. There are several major chemist chains and smaller pharmacies, Australia Post, bakeries, hair, beauty and nail salons. The Austin and Mercy Hospitals, GP clinics, gyms, restaurants, cafes (check out Rock'n'Roll'd, The Alleyway. Proof Pizzeria & Black Pig & Sons), Warringal Shopping Centre (ALDI, Coles, TK Max), schools, parks and playgrounds for adults, children and dogs, sporting ovals. The list certainly goes on! For instance, other major shopping centres are just a few kilometers away (10 mins by bus), such as Northland. You'll also find a Hoyts Cinema and Timezone there as well.
Dine-in cuisine is diverse and includes all of the usual, such as modern Australian, Italian, Greek, Indian, Vietnamese, Japanese, Chinese, Malaysian, Thai, and more. You'll find all of the familiar fast food outlets too, including KFC, McDonalds, Subway, etc. There is a 24 hour 7/11 on Burgundy street for those late night cravings. Check zomato and other sites for their recommendations!
For some good old 'pub grub', you can't go past the long established Sir Henry Barkly's Hotel and The Old England. Both have Bistros, alfresco dining and sports bars. But if you're after a nightclub or bars that have late night licences after 1am, you'll need to head into the Melbourne CBD or to the inner-north fringe suburbs, like Fitzroy, Northcote and Brunswick. These suburbs are just a 12-15 minute Uber drive away and offer everything interesting, diverse and eclectic.
Some interesting things about Heidelberg
Call me biased, but I would have to say that Heidelberg is one of the nicest suburbs of Melbourne and explains why I bought this home. It's also where I grew up, so I have some very fond memories.
Heidelberg was named by Continental Brown, a land agent, who promoted the suburb's apparent resemblance to its German namesake. I wonder if Brown street was named after Mr. Brown as well, and if the namesake attracted the many Western European families who chose to settle in Heidelberg? Many Melburnians of a certain age will remember The Salzburg Lodge, The Eagle's Nest and Edelweiss Restaurant. Three high-end, famous restaurants that brought a lot of culture to the area.
Green & Hilly
One of the first things you'll notice when you arrive is just how green and hilly it is. In fact, Brown and Hawdon streets offer you some of the best views of the trees and Melbourne, so it's worth taking a stroll or a ride around the neighborhood.
Safe place
Heidelberg's an incredibly safe neighborhood, making it highly appealing to singles, couples and families with kids. It has a lot to offer and is close enough to the action, but is also safely tucked away from a lot of the riff-raff of the cbd.
A suburb full of history
Heidelberg is also one of Melbourne's prized suburbs because of its long history. This is why it is one of the more affluent and historical areas of Melbourne. To give you some sense of that history, the local Heidelberg Primary School (a short walk down the hill) celebrated its 125th Anniversary around 48 years ago! This deeply rooted history can be seen in the established, tree-lined streets, the historical homes, and other buildings, and I feel fortunate that my childhood (family) home is still standing across the road and is one of the oldest in the area (circa 1850). Originally a farm-house on hundreds of acres it became the Heidelberg Tennis Club in the early 1900s. I played on that old court as a child but sadly I can't boast of any tennis playing skills.
Heidelberg Residents
The locals are quite friendly and come from all walks of life. Many have deep roots in the area and it's amazing how many of the original families are still around. My parents have been local to Heidelberg for almost 50 years!
Newer residents of Heidelberg have been drawn for the safety and aesthetic, work and convenience. For example, there are many medical, legal professionals and emergency service workers (eg Paramedics) who work at the two major public hospitals (Austin & Mercy & The Repatriation Hospital), and at the private ones (Warringal). There are also a lot of teachers and artists (the Heide Museum of Modern Art is close by, and my mother's Art School - Heidelberg Hill Artists - has been operating in the area for years. IT professionals and your regular digital nomad also find the area convenient, quiet and peaceful. Higher Education & VET students also love the area for its close proximity to many university, TAFE and other Education provider campuses and the city.
Quick Fun Fact:
Walter Burley Griffin, the American Architect - and his wife, Marion Mahony Griffin - not only designed our capital city, Canberra, their influence extended to Heidelberg and can be seen in four local Heidelberg houses, the Murray Griffin being one of the most famous.
