Location, Views, New (2015) 2 bed elevated apartment.
Located centrally for touring all of Kangaroo Island. Good sea and valley views from the apartment. Fish and swim from beach, jetty, kayaks or boats. Relax and recharge. Quiet and peaceful. Lots of wildlife live nearby.
Relax on the Jarrah deck with a drink and watch the sea and sky change every minute. We are in a valley just approx 300 metres back from the Ocean with a gentle rise from sea level to gain the sea views but still be close to the water for walks and fishing. So you get to see the birds fly down the valley and the Pelicans catching the thermals in Eastern Cove (bay). The Black Glossy parrots buzz the apartment and land in the trees nearby to eat the sheoak berries. Sunrises should you be awake early enough are often stunning hence the name for our home.
From this location 3 places of note are - 1) walk to Eastern Cove approx 300metres away and take a number of seaside walks to the wharf, Ballast Head, or go inland along walking trails. 2) take a short 10 minute Drive to Pennington Bay which gives you the many moods of the Southern Ocean (Next stop Antartica!) or in another direction 3) visit a photographer's paradise called 'Redbanks' on Nepean Bay/Western Cove. Its not crowded here and just 10 minutes by car. With such a backyard we are very fortunate.
The local wildlife lives in harmony generally with the residents of American River and its not unusual to have Echidna's, Wallabies, Kangaroos, Goannas, and a huge variety of bird life that buzz the home right through the day. They can get inquisitive so don't worry if you hear a Wallaby on the decks at night.
American River is a quiet township and has regular unleaded and diesel fuel, a general store with limited items and a Community Sports Centre for drinks and meals at set times during the week. There are also 2 Hotels with restaurants. You can catch fish at the wharf or if you are lucky and time it right go out with a local sailing group just for the experience and we don't charge either. A new development is a project on the Wharf area to rebuild a timber American Schooner from which the Township gains its name and maritime history.
Within 10 km of American River you have choice of numerous Ocean beaches, rocky sea landscapes, the wharf/ jetty area and extensive walking trails skirting the ocean and inland.
From American River in one direction is the Dudley Peninsula with Chapman River, 2 very highly regarded wineries for good food and fantastic views of Backstairs passage and Cape Willoughby with the lighthouse.
From American River in another direction there is usually a day to explore just along the North Coast, then another day for the South Coast. Each location has its own national parks and walking trails plus fishing / ocean vantage points.
The Western National Park (1/3rd of the island) is best as a day trip just to see some highlights.
The main Island township is also approx 20-30 minutes away From American River at the east end of the Island.
Its a fantastic place to live and we are living the dream plus enjoy sharing our paradise. It did take over 10 years to get settled and now we have a great apartment to share with friends, guests and tourists from around the world. We added 2 new apartments in 2019 that are accessible for those requiring wheelchair assistance and special needs re bathroom, kitchen. and bedroom facilities.
